"Learning is the only thing the mind never exhausts, never fears, and never regrets" ~ Leonardo Da Vinci
Hi Families and Students, I hope you are all doing well during this difficult time. Please take this time to help your child with his/her Math homework as well as their online assignments. Parent-teacher-student communication is important for student growth and achievement. I will be available for "office hours", live, from 9 a.m.- 1 p.m. daily. I will be actively responding to your emails at that time to answer any questions your child may have about assignments. As always, you can email me whenever there is a question or concern, but outside of the stated "office hours" my 24 hour turn around for responses is in effect. I will be meeting virtually with the students using Google Hangouts Meet starting April 14th from 11 a.m.- 12 (noon) so please keep this in mind. Together we will get through this. Can't wait to see you all again! Take care and be safe!
A little about me:
I've been teaching at Haugan for 15 years now, so some of you might already know me. This is my 10th year teaching 5th grade and out of those 10 years, I've been teaching 5th grade Math for 6 years and I absolutely LOVE IT!!!!!!!!! I've also taught 3rd grade and 7th/8th grade at Haugan. I graduated from Northeastern Illinois University in May of 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and received a master’s degree in Teaching English as a Second Language from Northeastern University in May 2015. I just completed coursework toward a major in Mathematics through the American College of Education in Indiana.
I have two sons ages 13 and 10. My 13 year old will be going to high school in the Fall and my 10 year old son is in 5th grade. They enjoy reading, playing Fortnite and riding their bikes to the park.
Reading is essential for success. Please make sure your child is reading for leisure at least 20 minutes a night. They have checked out books from my classroom library the day before the school closure, so please have them read.
It is important that your child checks his/her school emails on a daily basis. I've been emailing them everyday with assignment information and this way we can communicate during this difficult time and make the best of it.
Google Classroom is up and running. I have included important information, so make sure your child reads through it. He/she can submit their assignments on google classroom or they can email it to me. The class code for google classroom is hq5twfo. I've sent invitations to all 3 classes (321, 320, 316).
A typical day in 321 is quite busy as students participate in hands on differentiated activities/lessons, interesting read alouds with discussions, interactive math videos, real world leveled lessons with manipulatives/visuals, mini projects that students can relate to such as creating their own fraction pizza, rigorous problem of the week short reponse problems, online programs such as Khan Academy and Compass Odyssey Learning, and active participation in meaningful games. Motivation is the key to success and when students are motivated they are active participants in the learning process, which results in student growth toward the mastery of content for college and career readiness and this is my goal.
Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn ~ Benjamin Franklin.
(please work on these lessons at least 30 minutes a day. You were assigned 40+ lessons to work on this past Monday. Let me know if you have an issue logging in).
(use the same login that you were using since the beginning of the year. I assigned more lessons to work on such as multiplication and fractions. Make sure all lessons created by me have been completed).
